As part of a graduate course in User-Centered Design in Autumn 2023, we undertook a project with the aim of enhancing women's healthcare experiences. We designed an interactive AI teddy bear to enhance women's OB/GYN appointments.

In the field of obstetric and gynecological care, women often encounter significant challenges. Navigating the complexities of reproductive health, they grapple with gaps in medical understanding that lead to negative emotions and assumptions. These challenges create gaps in an otherwise well-intentioned healthcare system, leading to women feeling disconnected and hindering their access to quality care.

Communiteer is a mobile app which helps users get involved in local community service and volunteering. It helps them finding nearby volunteer opportunities and share their stories to others for more involvement.

Finding a perfect-fit volunteer experience is always hard and time consuming. Due to this hassle, we tend to be exhausted during volunteer hunting and procrastinate to attend one for later when we have a spare time or money. However, still there are people who need our help, so we need a streamlined platform for easier and consistent way to find an opportunity.

  • On a scale of 1 to 5, how comfortable do you feel discussing your OBGYN needs with a healthcare professional?

  • Are there any barriers that prevent you from seeing an OB/GYN?

  • Have you ever felt that your symptoms or concerns were not taken seriously by healthcare providers?

We sent out a survey that asked BIPOC women general questions about their reproductive check up information, such as their insurance and their main barriers preventing them from going to the OB/GYN.

After completing all of our interviews, we consolidated our users' responses and created an affinity diagram to identify any common patterns.

  • Many experiences negative emotions and assumptions before going to their doctor (anxiety, fear, etc).

  • When looking for an OB/GYN, many preferred someone who is kind, relatable/personable, and a woman.

  • Many assumed they would be judged for the reason they went to the OB/GYN.

  • Many cared about their clinic/hospital's location and availability.

  • Many utilize social media/educational videos to learn about reproductive health

Women face challenges when seeking OB/GYN care. As a result, we wanted to explore how we allow women to get more accessible help for their needs

We asked questions like:

HMW help women feel comfortable and confident on their own and with communicating their health concerns to an OBGYN?

HMW help women feel comfortable and confident on their own and with communicating their health concerns to an OBGYN?

We ideated 24 potential solutions aimed at addressing pain points women seeking OB/GYN healthcare experienced.

We had the following goals in mind. The design should:

  • Comfort users through uncomfortable times

  • Provide reassurance to women dealing with emotional uncertainties

  • Help women keep track of their health

  • Educate women on the OB/GYN appointment process

  • Empower women to take action on their health

  • Create a more accessible means for women to receive healthcare

During our brainstorming session we took the main findings from our research and divided our initiative into three sections.

  • Service + Preferences

  • Interventions for Comfort

  • Tools to Communicate Symptoms

Through further narrowing down our priorities, we were able to more effectively come up with potential solutions that addressed our primary needs.

I've conducted further rounds of design ranking to refine user flows and primary attributes. In this way, I discovered the most effective and workable approaches.

AI Teddy Bear

We sketched and decided to further refine the “AI Teddy Bear” because it streamlines the symptom tracking process, brings comfort to health monitoring, and makes it easier to talk about health concerns with an OBGYN.

We also included:

  • A keychain teddy bear for portability

  • An accompanying app to allow users to review their past symptom entries

We developed storyboards and user flows that covered possible scenarios and features we wanted to implement, and used these to guide our initial AI Teddy Bear prototype.

Reflection

If given more time, we hope to further explore the feasibility of our features, while also considering the cost to ensure that it’s accessible. In terms of our brand, we would also like to explore additional plush options to have a diverse selection that is more inclusive and engaging for users.

Key takeaways

Innovative Thinking Upon starting our project, we were restricted from creating an app or website, unless it was an additional component to our main solution. This encouraged us to have a creative approach and to think about our users in a broader sense, considering their interactions beyond a digital screen.

AI in Healthcare Although we see the potential of AI in healthcare, we learned that there’s a need to prioritize privacy when handling sensitive health information. This helped us better understand the ethical aspects of using AI, stressing the need for clear communication and strong security measures to build user trust.
